Which travel insurance for a motorcycle raid in Morocco?

Riding Morocco's tracks taught us one thing: travellers who leave well prepared enjoy their adventure far more. The route, the bike, the gear — everyone thinks about those. Insurance, much less. This guide is here to take care of that last point, simply.

Something unexpected on a remote track can happen to anyone. That's not a reason to stay home — it's a reason to leave smart.

Why travel insurance is essential for a motorcycle raid in Morocco

Morocco is not Europe. In major cities, healthcare is accessible and generally reliable. But once you leave the main roads — which is exactly what we do during our raids — everything changes. A fall on a remote track, a fracture, a hospital stay: costs add up quickly, and most European health insurance plans won't cover you outside the European Union.

Medical evacuation

This is what surprises people the most. A helicopter evacuation or a medically equipped ambulance from a remote area can cost between €5,000 and €20,000. Without insurance, it comes out of your own pocket. With proper coverage, it's a phone call.

Unexpected cancellation

Life doesn't give warnings. An accident before departure, a health issue, a family emergency — and you lose everything you've already paid. Cancellation coverage won't prevent the unexpected, but it will prevent financial loss on top of it.

Personal liability abroad

Less obvious, but just as important. If you're involved in an incident with a third party in Morocco — a pedestrian, a local vehicle — your European insurance may not cover it. Better not to discover that at the wrong moment.

Theft or loss of luggage

GPS devices, riding gear, technical equipment — replacing them mid-trip is not trivial. Some policies include this coverage, and it's worth checking.

What a good motorcycle travel insurance should cover

Not all travel insurance policies are equal — and some exclusions make them almost useless for this type of trip. Here is what a solid policy should include, at minimum:

• Medical expenses and hospitalisation abroad

• Medical evacuation and 24/7 assistance

• Trip cancellation or interruption

• Personal liability abroad

• Loss, theft or damage to luggage

• Transport delays or disruptions

Important: always check that off-road motorcycle riding is explicitly covered. Some policies exclude "high-risk activities" or off-road motorised vehicles — which is exactly what we do. Read the terms and conditions, not just the marketing summary.

Our advice for choosing the right motorcycle travel insurance

Does my credit card provide enough coverage?

This is the question we get most often. Premium or Gold credit cards do offer basic travel coverage, but the limits are usually too low for a serious medical evacuation — often capped around €11,000. And exclusions for sports activities are common. Call your bank, ask clearly, and read the written confirmation. Don't rely on assumptions.

Is the full duration of the raid covered?

Many policies are limited to 30 or 60 days. For longer trips, make sure the entire duration is covered — including travel days. One uncovered day is one too many.

What to do in case of emergency in Morocco?

Keep your insurer's assistance number in your phone — and on paper in your belongings. In areas without network coverage — and it does happen — always share your itinerary with a contact back home. That person can alert emergency services if needed. It's a simple habit that can make all the difference.

Should I take out a policy before or after booking?

Before, without hesitation. Cancellation coverage only applies to events that occur after the policy is taken out. If you wait and something happens in the meantime, you're not covered. It's one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes.
